Context and challenge
Several municipal public authorities in Trentino were facing a significant increase in road collisions caused by ungulates and large wildlife crossing the road, particularly on extra-urban and mountain stretches characterized by poor visibility and night-time traffic. The main challenge was to improve road safety without resorting to invasive infrastructure, while ensuring reliable detection in complex environmental conditions and reducing false alarms. It was also necessary to develop a system that would work effectively at night, integrate easily into the existing road environment and be accepted by drivers.
Solution
QUAD IMPIANTI designed and installed a full-scale roadside system for the automatic detection of ungulates and large animals, based on the integration of infrared thermal cameras, radar, lidar and IoT sensors supported by advanced analysis algorithms. The system detects animals near the roadway, estimates their distance and crossing time, and activates real-time light signals — and acoustic signals where provided — to warn drivers. The solution was optimized to operate in low-visibility conditions and calibrated to local species and the surrounding environment, contributing to a significant reduction in accident risk and improving road safety.
